On April 29 the 8th Grade participated in a financial literacy simulation called Finance Park at the Community First Credit Union Financial Literacy & Career Exploration Center on the Fox Valley Technical College Campus.  Students had the opportunity to build a budget based on a randomly assigned fictional financial situation including income, credit score, marital status, and family status.  After building their budget in the Budgeting Phase they then went through a Shopping Phase in which they put their budgets to the test to see if they were able to effectively manage their finances, live within their means, and spend within their budget.  Students also had to navigate unexpected incomes and expenses that they weren't expecting and update/modify their budget accordingly.

This is one component of how we develop students who are financially literate.

Students in Mrs. Morse's Food for Life class participated in the Build a Burger Contest as part of their nutrient unit on Proteins. Students worked cooperatively to create a recipe, prepare it, construct a poster with a nutrition facts label, and present it to a group of judges. The "Glazed and Confused" Burger earned top honors created by Ally, Bella, Gavin, and Brooklyn. This novel burger consisted of a seasoned patty topped with caramelized onions and bacon, served on a glazed donut drizzled with syrup and crushed sweet potato chips.

Omro High School selects a senior student each month to be the Student of the Month. Seniors are selected for their academic successes, leadership abilities, citizenship, and extracurricular activities. The seniors who are selected for this honor are also invited to attend an American Legion meeting for recognition by the sponsoring organization and may go on the ballot to be a graduation speaker.

The April Student of the Month is Ariana. Throughout high school, Ariana has been involved in Basketball, Soccer, Volleyball, National Honor Society, Student Council, Spanish Club, and Sources of Strength. She can also be found volunteering her time through participation in Shopping Day With Kids, the Milis Track Meet, H.B. Patch Field Day, Highway Clean-Up, Breakfast with the Bunny/Santa, working concession stands, and the Spooktacular Haunted House. Outside of school, Ariana enjoys doing nails, being active and going outside, shopping, and hanging out with friends and family. After graduation, she plans to continue her education at UW-La-Crosse, studying Sport and Exercise Science. Ariana would eventually like to become a pediatric physical therapist.

Fab Lab Receives $7,000 grant from Alliant Energy Foundation The School District of Omro received a $7,000 grant from the Alliant Energy Foundation to support their STEAM Fab Lab initiatives. This grant will help continue supporting their High School Fab Lab and their K-5 outreach. “The focus of these funds will expand the robotics capabilities of our Elementary students and add additional tools to the High School Fab Lab,” said Rob Turner, Fab Lab Director. “It will teach students the basics of coding starting in Kindergarten and how AI can be integrated into robotics and other automated processes at the 9-12 grade levels. This is a great opportunity for our new STEAM integrator in the Elementary, Kyle Schulz, to expand the learning process to our K-5 students and align them with what we are working on in the High School.” The Alliant Energy Foundation is committed to making a positive difference in the communities where Alliant Energy employees, retirees and customers live and work. The Foundation, which is funded solely by Alliant Energy shareowners, seeks to further the corporation’s goal of being a good corporate citizen and contributing member of society. Since 1998, the Foundation has contributed more than $62 million to innovative projects and local nonprofits. For more information, visit alliantenergy.com/foundation. If you have a background in AI or coding and would like to learn more about what we are offering here in our district please contact rturn@omrok12.wi.us. We are always looking for new student involvement and donations of time and resources from experts. #FoxPride #PoweringBeyond

CAPP Speech students from Mrs. Miller's UWO speech course created unique products in class while working on small group communication. Together, each group had to create a product, name it, explain how it worked, and sell it to the rest of the class. Students found many random items in a box that they needed to use to create something that members of the class could use. Such creativity and fun!

On Friday April 11th, representatives from the Omro High School Sources of Strength program went to the Mental Wellness Student Leadership Summit in Madison. Peer Leaders and Adult Advisors were able to network with leaders from other suicude prevention programs from across the state. Leaders from other schools were very impressed with our robust Source of Strength program and our Peer Leaders did an amazing job sharing our successes. We came back inspired with fun activities to implement next year.
