Each year, on the Tuesday of the first full week of May, National Teacher Appreciation Day is recognized. We couldn’t let this day pass by without taking a moment to recognize and thank all of the dedicated teachers and staff who are the backbone of our educational community. Thank you for having a positive impact!

Ms. Ransom and Ms. Jentz took a few Sources of Strength peer leaders to Madison for a Mental Wellness Student Leadership Summit, hosted by the Wisconsin Office of Children’s Mental Health. We met First Lady Kathy Evers, who shared that her and Governor Evers used to live in Omro and loved the area. We listened to speakers and learned about mental health resources. We were able to connect with students from over 40 schools across Wisconsin to make connections and share ideas about promoting student wellness. Students felt proud of the work that SOS has done and other schools were impressed with our program at OHS.

On Thursday, April 18, OES hosted more than 35 first grade families in their first ever Moving Up Night. The evening consisted of a brief welcome in the Media Center, followed by student and family breakouts. The students went with OES teachers for an activity while the adult family members gained insight into different aspects of OES, such as learning targets, pick-up/drop-off routines, building layout, etc. The culminating activity had students reconnecting with their families for a scavenger hunt where they visited specific classrooms and staff, providing a chance to become familiar with the building and interact with adults they will see next year. As students completed each portion of the scavenger hunt, they received a “goodie” and could turn their completed hunt in for a Class of 2035 keychain made in our School District of Omro Fab Lab! The event was planned by the District’s Home Visit team, which focuses on building engagement between schools and families.

Over Spring Break, some of the members from Omro High School’s Spanish 3 and Spanish 4 classes took a trip to Belize. Mrs. Kennedy, Mrs. Resop, and Ms. Burns were all chaperones. It looks like it was a great experience for everyone! Read below for a summary of days 4-6 of the trip. On the Fourth day of their trip to Belize, the Spanish group got to experience the delicious process that takes cacao to chocolate. In the afternoon, they got to enjoy a relaxing beach day at their beautiful resort. Some of the students rested, a volleyball game got going, and a few tried (quite successfully) to recreate a Mayan pyramid. On the fifth day of the Belize trip, the group had the opportunity to go snorkeling in the Cayes (pronounced "Keys"), the small islands and atolls that make up the reef that abuts Belize. It was a beautiful morning to discover many types of coral, fish, starfish, sea cucumbers and more. In the evening, a group of Garifuna drummers came to teach the group about their cultural tradition. Everyone had the opportunity to participate (and the other guests at the resort had fun watching, too). On their last full day in Belize, the Spanish classes group got to learn about the citrus industry in Belize. They learned about greening, a problem caused by an insect that can wipe out an entire orange grove. To help out, the group planted some new Valencia Orange trees in the grove. Later, as they travelled back to Belize City, the group had the opportunity to to stop at the Belize Zoo, which only has animals native to Belize, most of whom are rescued or orphaned animals or were born at the zoo to rescued or orphaned animals. Visitors can get right up close to the animals, and the monkeys can even come and go as they please. (They are usually pleased to stay for dinner time).

This week’s Omro Staff Spotlight features Ms. Shannon Goltz. She is a third grade teacher at OES. Shannon is currently in her third year here in Omro. Outside of school, she enjoys reading, crafting, playing games, spending time with family, and watching movies. When asked about a quote that resonates with her, she responded with, “Embrace the magic of new beginnings.” Thank you, Ms. Goltz, for all you do for our students!
