This week’s Omro Staff Spotlight features Ms. Alesha Neitzke. She is a reading intervention teacher, supporting students at both H.B. Patch and Omro Elementary. Alesha is in her thirteenth year here in Omro, and fourteenth year in education. Alesha likes to spend time reading ,working out, camping, gardening, and spending time with her kids and friends. When asked about a favorite motivational saying, she shared a quote by Lady Bird Johnson, “Children are likely to live up to what you believe of them.” Thank you, Ms. Neitzke, for all you do for our students!

Día de los Muertos is a colorful celebration and a time to remember loved ones. The holiday originated in Mexico, but is now celebrated all over Latin America on November 1-2. Some common elements include ofrendas or altars, calaveras de azúcar or sugar skulls, marigolds and pan de muerto. This year, Mrs. Babcock's second grade class had a special learning experience about Dia de los Muertos led by one of their classmates. Melissa and her mom made pan de muerto for the class to try, which is bread of the dead. Additionally, Melissa wrote a poem and read it to the class. What a leader! Way to shine Melissa!!

Recently, David Gjertson from Gjertson Design (a Wisconsin native and a student's great uncle) zoomed in live from Atlanta to talk to Mrs. Geracie's 4th grade class about his work as a landscape architect/urban planner and his son, Eric's, work as a 3D character artist/animator. He shared drawings from projects he has done over the years, showed tools that he uses, and talked about his education and how he got to where he is today. He then shared his son's journey from doodling as an elementary student up through the work he currently does designing characters for video games. The meeting wrapped up with a tutorial on how to sketch and all students had a chance to sketch a barn/silo scene while he sketched them as a class. It was a fantastic opportunity and fun was had by all! Thank you, Mr. Gjertson, for taking time out of your busy schedule to connect with our students here in Omro!

Ms. Downs' 3rd grade class became published authors last week! The students wrote paragraphs about their heroes- someone who has had a positive influence on their life and exhibits heroic qualities. Students wrote about their parents, teachers, coaches, etc. Students also created their own illustrations to go with their paragraphs. The students then took their paragraphs through the writing process, making sure it was ready for the final step- publishing! The published book, "Our Book of Heroes", has arrived and now they have their own piece of published writing to keep forever! Ms. Downs is very proud of their dedication and hard work.

There is much excitement on the OES playground with a killdeer pair nesting on our playground! The students are delighted everyday to see the birds guarding their four speckled eggs. The mom and dad take turns sitting on the eggs and keeping a watchful eye amidst the playing children. Everyone at OES has been respectful and responsible to give this pair their space and observe the progress. Another reminder of what makes Omro a wonderful place to be!
