Bruce Fowler Memorial Arboretum
The Bruce Fowler Memorial Arboretum is being planned in honor of the late Bruce Fowler, beloved OHS biology teacher, who was fallen by pancreatic cancer in the autumn of 2011. The project is being designed and developed by the Friends of the Bruce Fowler Arboretum (FBFA) currently consisting of Omro faculty members, Pat Fowler, Phil Ertmer, and Eileen (Wilson) Cimermancic.
The arboretum was a vision of Mr. Fowler’s and will be developed as an outdoor classroom of tree and bush species native to the Omro area for the purpose of study and enjoyment by the schools and general public.
Work will begin at the two-acre site, south of OES and adjacent to the fitness trail this spring during Earth Week (April 22-26). The initial phase will involve the planting of “anchor” trees of different species; trees with trunk diameters of 4”-5”, 20-25 feet tall, spaded in by Phil Ertmer of Kwik Shade Tree Service. A second phase will be the planting of “whips”; trees with trunk diameters of 1”, 5-6 feet tall planted by students. A third phase will be student plantings of over 1900 DNR saplings. The goal will be to develop groves of native species in various stages of maturity. Future plans involve the development of a trail, trailside seating, and an interpretive center.
Anyone interested in becoming involved as a member of the FBFA in order to help make Mr. Fowler’s vision a reality is urged to contact Joe Horvath by e-mail (firstname.lastname@example.org) or school phone (920/303-2301 ext. 236). FBFA is looking for labor help in tree planting, summer watering, trail development and building construction.
Monetary donations toward the purchase of trees and materials can be also be made. A $400 donation will buy and pay for the spading in of a larger “anchor” tree of choice along with a plaque denoting both the tree’s scientific and donor’s name. Smaller donations will help pay for the smaller trees and construction materials. Checks can be made out to Fowler Arboretum Fund, and sent to;
